One way of staying healthy (and sane …) as a student is to have a technique for studying. We try to share tips on how to make your study hours a little more efficient and fun (a month or so ago, we shared a blog post on the Pomodoro Technique). Today’s tip is to use highlighting pens. Highlighting is a great way to show yourself what’s important. By doing it, you can study more efficiently, and you make it super easy for yourself to review important information in a jiffy.
First thing’s first: do your highlighting AFTER class. Go home, rewrite your notes on a clean sheet of paper and then mark things which are extra important, interesting and things you want to know more about/don’t understand. That way you won’t miss things during class, and you get a first review of the information for free ;) Use a specific color for each category.
Whenever you want to add comments or information later on, you can use post-its or colored pens in the same color as your highlighting pen, that way, you’ll know what category the comment, thought or added info belongs to.
If you like this technique for studying, a tip is to create a small set of rules for how to use your highlighting pens, that way, in the future, you’ll find the info you’re looking for in your notes in no time.
Obviously, these tips are very analogue, but if you want to use them but take notes on your computer, most word processing programs/apps have similar, digital ways of highlighting :)
